As Ohio loses jobs, labor market continues to shrink
COLUMBUS – This morning, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services released the July jobs report and revised June figures for Ohio. After losing nearly 3,000 jobs in May, the revised June job creation figure was reduced by almost a third. July’s report showed Ohio lost 12,400 jobs overall with 2,900 jobs lost in manufacturing.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio has yet to regain at least 120,000 jobs it lost since the recession began more than six years ago.
When the national unemployment numbers for May were released last month, they were accompanied by a certain degree of fanfare. The U.S. economy had recovered the jobs it had lost since the recession officially began in December 2007. Ohio’s jobs report for May, released two weeks later, wasn’t as eventful.

This morning, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services released the May jobs report figures for Ohio. Ohio’s unemployment rate dropped in May, but only because 14,000 Ohioans dropped out of the labor market. The survey of Ohio households in May actually showed the number of employed Ohioans actually dropped by 4,000.
Governor Kasich maintained his silence on the 5,000 projected lay-offs in Ohio this year at his press conference yesterday. One possible explanation: while in Congress, John Kasich voted against a bill to require employers to give workers 60 days notice of impending lay-offs. The bill, known as the the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), was passed into law in 1988 despite Kasich’s opposition.
Governor Kasich remained silent on the possibility of Ohio losing nearly 1,200 jobs at Anchor Hocking over the weekend. While the Governor has repeatedly attended ceremonies to announce new jobs, he has said little about the projected 5,000 lay-offs across 23 counties already announced this year.
