Last night, NBC 4 in Columbus did a fact check of the new Republican Governors Association advertisement for John Kasich. They found the opening claim to be “not true” and poked holes in RGA’s claim that Governor Kaisch hasn’t raised taxes. The video is available HERE.
NBC 4: “Governor John Kasich’s reelection campaign is getting some help from the Republican Governor’s Association. It launched an ad touting Ohio’s economic comeback. NBC 4 political reporter Ted Hart takes a closer look tonight at the claims being made in the ad in tonight’s fact check.”
Ad: “An eight billion dollar deficit, only 89 cents in Ohio’s rainy day fund…”
NBC 4: The ad paints the gloomy economic conditions that Kasich inherited, although the opening line…”
Ad. “Four years ago, Ohio was in free fall…”
NBC 4: “…is not true. By mid 2010, the economic recovery in Ohio was already underway and stronger than in most states, according to the Federal Reserve Bank. That’s not to say, though, that things weren’t still bad when Kasich took over.”
Ad: “Then John Kasich stepped in and went to work, erased the deficit without raising taxes…”
NBC 4: “Some argue Kasich’s cuts in state funding for schools and local governments led to hundreds of local tax levies. Kasich has also cut state income taxes across the board while raising the state sales tax.”
