John Kasich’s Uncommon Nonsense

May 15, 2014

Today, the Republican Governors Association put out a new ad for John Kasich, in which the Governor asks “isn’t it time we start to govern with common sense?”

With his record of uncommon nonsense, it’s no wonder he has to ask.

Kasich Signed Pro-Gun Rights Legislation Just Days After Sandy Hook: “As expected, Gov. John Kasich on Thursday quietly signed into law a bill making it easier to store guns in vehicles and allowing them for the first time in parking garages under the Statehouse and the nearby state office tower housing his offices. The governor resisted calls for him to veto the bill in the wake of last week’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut, which has prompted a national conversation on gun laws.” [The Toledo Blade, 12/21/12]

Kasich “Right-to-Work” Bill Would Have Cut 34,000 Public Safety Jobs:  “The inability to bargain in any meaningful way could affect public safety in Ohio in a myriad of ways, McDonald [president of the Fraternal Order of Police in Ohio] said. According to McDonald, if Senate Bill 5 is not repealed, about 51,000 public employees across the state could lose their jobs. He estimates that about two-thirds of those will be public safety employees. Less police on the beat could mean increased crime rates while fewer firefighters in stations across the state could add to response times in emergencies.’” [The Washington Independent, 9/28/2011]

Pro-Life Doctors Say Kasich’s Restrictions on Women Health Make it Harder to Give Their Best Medical Advice to Expectant Mothers: “Some doctors say new laws limiting abortions in Ohio are interfering with the care they give women facing heartbreaking circumstances. Even those who oppose abortion say that before giving their best medical advice, they may need to call a lawyer…’Doctors can’t give their best advice in some situations because of possible repercussions of the law,’ Dr. Phil Cass, chief executive officer of the Columbus Medical Association,” [Columbus Dispatch, 2/9/2014]

Kasich Balanced the Budget Through “Higher Spending And Tax Cuts…Over Making The Tough Choices To Keep Spending Down”.  According to an analysis by right leaning think tank Opportunity Ohio, “it is clear that Governor John Kasich and the Ohio General Assembly prefer higher spending and tax cuts funded by projected higher revenues over making the tough choices to keep spending down. The sounder approach is to fund tax cuts with spending cuts.“ [Opportunity Ohio, 7/2/13]

Kasich Defended Hiring An All-White Cabinet: “[Kasich] probably won’t say much about some of the gaffes that have drawn national attention and have become part of the tapestry of his administration. He defiantly defended hiring an all-white Cabinet by dismissing calls for diversity as attempts to force him to embrace quotas. He relented and has since hired two black directors.” [Columbus Dispatch, 4/19/2011]
