Mayor of Dayton Nan Whaley ends campaign for governor and endorses Richard Cordray for governor.
Whaley ends campaign; endorses Cordray for governor
1.12.18 – Eight months ago, I threw my hat into the race for governor of Ohio.
I did it because as mayor of Dayton, I saw firsthand the way Republicans at the statehouse in Columbus were leaving communities behind. Instead of helping us fund infrastructure projects and community services, they were cutting taxes for their billionaire buddies. Instead of addressing the opioid epidemic, they were playing politics with women’s health and kicking voters off the rolls.
In these last eight months, I’ve met so many wonderful Ohioans who have inspired me to fight. And I will fight — but not as your governor. As of today, I’m ending my campaign.
I am endorsing Richard Cordray to be Ohio’s next governor. Rich is a committed public servant who fought for Ohioans as our Attorney General and fought for all Americans at the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau. He’s exactly who we need in Columbus to turn around eight years of Republican rule and lead our state into a bright future.
I want to thank you for every ounce of support you’ve given this campaign. Every dollar, every forwarded email, every “Like” on Facebook has meant so much to me. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: No one is as warm and passionate as Ohioans. That’s why I’ve made Dayton my home, and why I’m so proud to serve as mayor.
Speaking of which — my new term just began, and I’m looking forward to working hard to make improvements to our city. So this isn’t goodbye. You’ll be seeing a lot of me around town, and occasionally around the state, as I travel on city business.
Thank you again for everything you’ve done for me. Let’s work together to make sure Ohio’s next governor is a strong Democrat.
