January 31, 2017
Happy 2017! Barely a month into the new year and we’ve had such interesting events: the Inauguration, the Women’s Marches and the latest protests against Trump’s actions here at home and worldwide. I know we’re all busy with the influx of activists and energy Trump has created for us. With that in mind, ODCCA is undertaking some new strategies for strengthening local parties and electing more Democrats.
At our winter reorganizational meeting, officers for 2017-2019 were elected. Thank you again for your support and confidence in us! As part of our long range goals, Chairs were presented with two plans to help us organize regionally. We want your ideas and suggestions before moving forward. Former Ohio First Lady Frances Strickland presented ideas for changing our regional boundaries and meeting more frequently within them to create better local messaging and strengthen local parties. Counties within each region could share best practices, fundraising, activist meetings, etc. which would allow candidates to visit regionally on a more frequent schedule. Each region would have a dedicated liaison between the group and ODCCA ensuring that timely communication is occurring and keeping ODCCA informed of activities and needs in their region. The regional liaison could be a member of the ODCCA Executive Committee and participate in the duties and requirements of the executive body. Each region would determine priorities and initial needs and work with ODCCA to reach them. Butler County Chairwoman Jocelyn Bucaro emailed Chairs thoughts regarding organizing by size/type of counties; Urban, Suburban and Rural rather than geographically. That would facilitate similar counties being able to network and help each other while also having a representative to speak on their behalf to ODP and other organizations and candidates. The three big ‘C’ counties would be individual regions to themselves due to their unique needs. Suggestions were made to incorporate both plans and due to time constraints, no action was taken by ODCCA.
Thus, the purpose of this email: We want you to use the Ohio Map with counties outlined and draw your ideal region as would best suit your county’s needs. Which counties are you close to and which do you regularly communicate with? Which are similar to you in character, size or other demographics? Print off the map and draw your suggested boundary lines, then email it back to me. If you’re willing to serve as the regional liaison, please let us know! Also attached is the previous regional map which shows where the prior regions were and the liaison for each region. Ideally, we’d like to have this set up and running prior to the ODCCA Summit tentatively being planned for late spring. Your help and suggestions regarding the summit or any other issues are welcome.
Other actions taken at the 1-11-17 meeting included approving the ODP assessments for 2017. Your party assessment will remain the same as in the prior two years. By approving these assessments early, we hope you’ll have more time to budget and plan for 2017. If you need any additional information regarding the assessment, please contact me or Bill DeMora at ODP.
ODCCA was privileged to have candidates for the DNC Chair attend our meeting and speak to us regarding their candidacies. The Honorable Tom Perez, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Idaho Democratic Party Executive Director Sally Boynton Brown spoke with chairs and also attended the Board of Elections Reception following our ODCCA meeting. That event was overwhelmingly successful as more than 200 elections officials, candidates and activists attended. Also attending the ODCCA meeting was Steven Dettelbach, former US Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, who announced his candidacy for Ohio Attorney General. Steve spoke during our meeting and then later introduced his friend and former boss, Tom Perez, during the ODP Executive Committee. Several other “potential candidates” for the 2018 races also attended our meeting and the reception.
Based on the current level of interest, the 2018 election is going to be a very dynamic one. I have requested to serve on the ODP nominating and screening committee being formed for the 2018 gubernatorial candidates. If you have an interest in serving on this committee or the additional one being formed for the down ballot candidates, please contact Chairman Pepper asap. I plan to attend the DNC meeting being held in Detroit on Feb 3rd and 4th. I’ll report back on what I heard from the candidates and DNC members. There will be another opportunity to hear from those seeking DNC office on Feb 10th and 11th in Baltimore, MD. Let me know if you’re interested in attending either of these important meetings. .
Please remit your dues (thanks to those who have done so already) to ODCCA asap. We’re attempting to have all 88 counties as members by the spring summit! You will find the ODCCA 2017 Dues invoice here. So please send your $50 today!
Thank you for your continued support and activism!
